Museums in Dakar

Black Civilizations Museum (Musée des civilisations noires): Opened to the public in 2018 after 7 years of construction, this 14,000 m2 museum is remarkable for its architecture inspired by impluvium huts. Inside, it traces the history and evolution of the African continent through works displayed around an imposing 4.5-metre-high metal baobab tree. You can admire traditional cult objects, archaeological remains, photographs and contemporary creations, all part of temporary exhibitions organized in partnership with other international museums, including the Jacques Chirac Museum of Primitive Arts in Paris.

Boribana Contemporary Art Museum: The museum features works by contemporary painters from the African diaspora, including African-American artists. Also worth seeing is the garden, where ancient statues stand side by side with works made from recycled materials.  The museum also houses an artists' residence.

Léopold Sédar Senghor Museum: It was in this house on Dakar's western corniche that Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal's first president, poet and academician, lived with his wife Colette from 1981 until his death in 2001. A visit full of emotions and memories of this illustrious figure in national history.

Henriette Bathily Museum of Women: Formerly located on the island of Gorée, the museum in Dakar's Place du Souvenir Africain (African Remembrance Square) pays tribute to the Senegalese women, past and present, who have shaped the country's history. Whether anonymous or famous, like Aminata Fall, passers-on of ancestral know-how, bearers of traditions or pioneers, committed women play a major role in Senegal, in the countryside as much as in the cities. Henriette Bathily, godmother of this museum, was director of Keita Fodéba's African Ballets in Europe and Africa, then news director at Radio Sénégal and director of the cultural department at the French Cultural Centre until 1984.

Theodore Monod Museum of African Art at Ifan (Fundamental Institute of Black Africa - Institut fondamental d’Afrique Noire): Inaugurated in 1931, this museum is the benchmark for primitive art in Senegal and beyond West Africa. The Ifan museum presents permanent collections and temporary exhibitions in collaboration with international museums. It is one of the official venues for the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art.
