Fishing village on Ngor Island

To reach its shores, the 5-minute crossing is made aboard traditional pirogues or, for the more athletic, by swim! Once there, you'll be overwhelmed by the authenticity of the place. The village of Ngor reveals itself through its narrow, flower-filled lanes, a veritable maze of dry-stone houses in which you can happily lose yourself. The facades are decorated with colourful earthenware, giving each a singular cheerfulness, while others are open-air works of art.

The fishing village can only be seen by those who take the time to listen, to feel, to observe the life that unfolds to the rhythm of the tides and fishing. In Ngor, everyone knows each other and helps each other out. There's the chatter of the women on their doorsteps, the return of the fishermen, the games of the children who know the maze of alleyways from their earliest years. As you stroll along, make your way to the sacred baobab tree, which holds a special place in the island's traditional culture.

In all, there are 24 trails to explore this picturesque and touching islet.

Art on Ngor Island

Like the capital of Dakar, the island of Ngor is a popular spot for contemporary artists. Street-art-style murals adorn the facades of houses and buildings, while sculptures are scattered all over the islet, offering surprises along the way. And let's not forget the photographers who love the colours of Ngor, its blend of land, sea and sky. As for music, the spirit of Bob Marley still hovers over the island, inspiring many reggae fans every May 11, the anniversary of the icon's death.

In addition to these informal exhibitions, the island of Ngor boasts several galleries. Some are confidential, tucked away in the village lanes. Others are better known. Such as Villa Keur Bibou, set in the middle of a tropical garden. Its owner has assembled an African art collection of over 2,000 pieces and objects from 24 different countries (Gabon, Mali, Kenya, etc.).

Surfing on Ngor island

With its 3 beautiful beaches and clear, warm waters, the island is a magnet for bathing enthusiasts. It also boasts 2 renowned surfing spots on the Atlantic side, with waves that come right up to the reefs. Surfing legend Robert August came here to film The Endless Summer. Experienced surfers are no strangers to these waves.
Snorkeling is also possible on the island's sheltered south coast.
